Caribou, Maine – Wind chills across northern and eastern Maine are expected to plunge well below zero by Friday evening, creating dangerous conditions for anyone traveling along U.S. 1, Route 11, and other exposed roadways. Temperatures will fall into the single digits Thursday night before intensifying cold north winds push wind chills toward minus-20 to minus-30 late Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, breezy north winds will strengthen Friday afternoon as light snow spreads into Downeast communities, reducing visibility and creating slippery patches on Route 89 and rural roads. Snow totals will remain light, but forecasters warn that even minor accumulation will turn icy quickly once temperatures tumble into the teens and single digits after sunset.

Wind chills of minus-20 and colder can freeze exposed skin in under 30 minutes, prompting emergency managers to urge residents to limit outdoor time and bring pets indoors. Drivers in Aroostook County should use caution on stretches of U.S. 1A where blowing snow may drift across lanes, especially in open areas south of Caribou and north of Houlton. The combination of light snow, gusty winds and falling temperatures may cause patchy black ice on shaded bridges and overpasses.

Local plow crews expect only spot treatment early Friday, but a more active period may unfold after sunset as moisture freezes. Utility crews are monitoring for isolated outages in areas where winds funnel through higher terrain, though widespread power issues are not anticipated.

Forecasters note that confidence in a larger Sunday night storm has decreased, but updated model runs later Friday will help clarify any additional threats. More advisories may be issued if wind speeds increase or temperatures fall lower than anticipated.
