Minneapolis, MN – Snow-covered roads are slowing traffic across the Twin Cities and central Minnesota early Thursday, with light snowfall continuing until 8 a.m. and creating hazardous conditions for the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Twin Cities/Chanhassen, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 8 a.m. CST for much of central Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Additional snowfall of up to 1 inch is expected across Hennepin, Ramsey, Dakota, Washington and surrounding metro counties, while areas from St. Cloud and Alexandria to Willmar and Morris could see up to 2 inches.
Even light accumulation is enough to keep highways snow-packed, especially on untreated roads. Interstates 94 and 35W, along with Highways 10 and 23, may remain slick through the early commute. In western Wisconsin, Hudson, River Falls and Menomonie are also seeing reduced traction on secondary roads.
Snow will gradually diminish from west to east through sunrise, but cold pavement temperatures will limit melting. Drivers should slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check 511mn.org or 511wi.gov for updated road conditions before heading out.
Road conditions should slowly improve later this morning as snowfall tapers, though isolated slick spots may linger into midday.
