Medford, OR – Heavy snow is rapidly piling up across southern and eastern Siskiyou County early Thursday, with up to 20 inches falling in higher terrain and making travel nearly impossible over key mountain passes through 10 a.m. PST.
According to the National Weather Service in Medford, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 10 a.m. for areas including Mount Shasta City, Dunsmuir, McCloud and Tennant. Additional snowfall of 4 to 12 inches is expected in lower elevations, with the bulk of accumulation occurring between midnight and 8 a.m. Higher peaks and exposed terrain could see totals approaching 20 inches.
Interstate 5 south of Weed, along with Highways 97 and 89, are seeing dangerous conditions, especially near Black Butte Summit, Snowman Summit, Dead Horse Summit and Grass Lake Summit. Snow-covered pavement and low visibility are creating treacherous driving conditions, particularly near Mt. Shasta Ski Park Road.
Caltrans crews are working to clear priority routes, but chain controls and temporary closures are possible at higher elevations. Officials urge motorists to delay travel if possible and carry emergency supplies including food, water and a flashlight.
Snow intensity will decrease later this morning, with lighter showers tapering toward midday. Even after snowfall eases, packed snow and icy stretches may persist on mountain roads. Travelers should check 511 or QuickMap for real-time road updates before heading out.
