Sacramento, California – Up to 66.8 inches of snow fell in the Sierra over 72 hours, impacting major mountain corridors near Interstate 80 and Highway 50.

According to the US National Weather Service Sacramento, snowfall totals from the past three days show significant accumulation across higher elevations of Northern California. The 72-hour snowfall analysis, valid early Tuesday morning, highlights extreme totals along the Sierra crest and surrounding mountain communities.

The Sierra Snow Lab recorded 66.8 inches. Blue Canyon measured 62 inches, while Sierra-at-Tahoe and Kirkwood both reported 61 inches. Sugar Bowl saw 57 inches, Soda Springs 55 inches, and Dodge Ridge 52 inches. Castle Peak recorded 45 inches, Yuba Pass 36 inches, and Quincy measured 16.5 inches. Lower-elevation communities such as Shingletown reported 5.4 inches.

The heaviest snowfall aligned along the Interstate 80 corridor near Donner Pass and extended south toward Highway 50 and Highway 88. These totals may contribute to chain controls, reduced visibility, and ongoing travel delays through mountain passes.

In addition to snowfall, widespread precipitation fell across the Sacramento Valley and foothills, with several areas recording 2 to 4 inches of rain over the same period.

More precipitation is expected later today through Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

Mountain travel, including routes frequently used by student skiers and Bay Area commuters, may remain slow as crews continue snow removal operations.
