New Ulm, Minn. – Whiteout conditions are slamming parts of southern Minnesota right now, and travel across Brown, Redwood and Yellow Medicine counties could become life-threatening within minutes as wind gusts hit 55 mph.
According to the National Weather Service in Twin Cities/Chanhassen, a Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday for areas including New Ulm, Granite Falls and Redwood Falls. Snow totals will range from 2 to 4 inches, but powerful winds are dropping visibility below one-quarter mile, especially south of the Minnesota River.
Blowing snow is sweeping across open stretches of Highway 68 and rural county roads, while drifting is reducing visibility along Highways 14 and 19 near New Ulm. Gusts may snap tree limbs and create sudden whiteouts that trap drivers. Officials urge residents to restrict travel to emergencies only.
Farther north, light to moderate snow continues south of Interstate 94 under a Winter Weather Advisory, though drier air along Interstate 90 is limiting accumulation there.
If you must travel, carry a winter survival kit and check 511mn.org or dial 5-1-1 for live road updates. Blizzard conditions will persist through the evening commute, and additional advisories could follow if winds remain elevated beyond 6 p.m. Wednesday.
