Davenport, Iowa – Strong thunderstorms could develop along a cold front by mid-afternoon Thursday, bringing a 60 mph wind threat to communities along I-80 and I-74 through the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, the first severe storm risk of the season will unfold Thursday afternoon and evening as a storm system tracks east across Iowa into western Illinois. While overall storm coverage may remain scattered, any storm that strengthens could produce damaging wind gusts, small hail and an isolated tornado.

The primary window for stronger storms runs from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. in eastern Iowa, including Davenport, Bettendorf and Clinton. Storms will then shift east into Moline, Rock Island and Galesburg between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. The greatest risk area includes locations along and south of I-80, though instability levels remain somewhat limited.

Moisture availability will determine how intense storms become. If breaks in cloud cover allow temperatures to climb into the 60s, wind fields aloft could support gusts exceeding 60 mph along US-61 and US-30. High-profile vehicles on I-80 and I-74 should be prepared for sudden crosswinds and heavy downpours.

Residents are urged to stay weather aware Thursday afternoon, secure loose outdoor items and review severe weather safety plans now. Have multiple ways to receive warnings, especially during the evening commute. Additional updates and possible watches could be issued as confidence increases Thursday morning.
