Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Visibility has dropped to a quarter mile or less across parts of the I-95 corridor this morning, forcing drivers to slow down immediately as dense fog blankets southeastern Pennsylvania, South Jersey and northern Delaware through 10 a.m. Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. for Philadelphia, Trenton, Wilmington and surrounding communities. Patchy dense fog developed overnight and will linger through the morning commute, especially near rivers, low-lying areas and major highways including I-95, I-76, I-295 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
Drivers along I-78 near Allentown and on the Garden State Parkway near Atlantic City are also reporting sharply reduced visibility. In many areas, visibility may fall to 0.25 mile or lower with little warning. Officials urge motorists to use low-beam headlights, allow extra stopping distance and avoid sudden lane changes.
Beyond the fog, periods of light rain are expected later today, mainly north of Philadelphia into the Lehigh Valley and northern New Jersey. Rainfall totals will generally range from 0.10 to 0.50 inches, with the higher amounts north of I-78. Temperatures will remain mild, climbing into the 40s and 50s under overcast skies.
The fog threat diminishes gradually after 10 a.m., but cloudy and damp conditions persist through the afternoon. Additional advisories are possible if visibility fails to improve during the late morning commute.
