Pendleton, Oregon – Snow-covered mountain passes and reduced visibility are creating hazardous travel conditions right now across the Blue Mountains, where bursts of moderate to heavy snow will continue through 3 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for the Northern Blue Mountains of Oregon and the Northwest Blue Mountains in Washington. Communities including Tollgate, Meacham and the Ski Bluewood Resort area could see an additional 2 to 6 inches of snow before showers taper later this afternoon.

The heaviest snowfall is expected to ease later this morning, but lingering snow showers will keep roads slick into the afternoon hours. Mountain routes such as Interstate 84 near Meacham and Highway 204 toward Tollgate are likely to see chain requirements and reduced speeds. Periods of heavier snow may quickly cut visibility, especially at higher elevations along ridgelines.

Officials urge drivers to delay nonessential travel. If travel is unavoidable, carry chains, blankets, extra clothing, water and a flashlight in case you become stranded. Motorists should also avoid downed power lines and report outages to their utility provider. The warning remains in effect until 3 p.m., and road impacts could persist into the evening as temperatures remain cold.
