Nebraska skies look deceptively calm this morning, but change is charging toward Omaha and Council Bluffs. Temperatures are climbing into the mid-60s today, nearly 30 degrees above normal for February, while southwest winds gust near 29 mph. That warmth won’t last.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, increasing clouds will thicken through the day before a sharp pattern shift arrives Thursday. Rain develops early, then transitions to snow as colder air pours in. Highs fall to 43 degrees Thursday, and snow becomes likely by evening with around an inch possible in the metro. Some localized bands could produce heavier bursts, briefly lowering visibility on I-80 and I-29.
Plan ahead for slick pavement late Thursday into early Friday. North winds may gust above 25 mph, blowing snow across exposed roads. Even minor accumulation can create icy bridges once temperatures dip.
Friday turns sharply colder with sunshine and highs near 33. By Friday night, lows plunge near 19. Any slushy spots could refreeze quickly. This is classic flash-freeze season across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa.
Saturday remains cold with highs near 35 and a slight snow chance. Saturday night drops to the mid-teens under mostly clear skies. Sunday stays bright but brisk near 34.
Early next week slowly moderates into the 30s, and the 6–10 day outlook signals above-normal temperatures returning by late next week. Spring warmth may try to reclaim the Plains after this quick winter reminder.
