Pennsylvania – Wet pavement is already forming across downtown Pittsburgh as light rain moves in, and a sharp temperature swing is about to make this February day feel more like early spring than winter.

The National Weather Service says rain becomes widespread by midday, with precipitation chances near 90 percent. Highs climb to 58 degrees today, then surge to 61 on Thursday. South winds between 6 and 14 mph may gust above 20 mph at times, especially along bridges and higher elevations.

Drivers on I-376, I-279, and the Parkway East should expect ponding on roadways during heavier showers. Allow extra time through the afternoon commute. While temperatures stay well above freezing, cooler air returns this weekend and could change the conversation quickly.

Showers taper late tonight, with lows near 47. Another round of rain develops Thursday afternoon and continues into Thursday night. Friday stays mild with highs near 61 and additional rain likely.

Saturday offers a break, with mostly sunny skies and highs near 48. By Saturday night, colder air filters in. Rain may mix with or change to snow after 1 a.m., especially north and east of the city. Sunday turns colder, with highs near 40 and snow likely at times.

As temperatures dip into the 20s Sunday night, any leftover moisture could refreeze. This is prime flash-freeze season. Watch for slick spots on bridges and untreated roads into early Monday.

Looking toward next week, colder air lingers early, then moderates late week. A gradual warming trend may build again by next weekend.
