Grand Forks, North Dakota – Moderate to heavy snow is already falling across the Devils Lake Basin late Tuesday night, with up to 6 inches expected along and north of U.S. Highway 2 as conditions deteriorate through sunrise Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, the heaviest snow is focused west of Grand Forks near Devils Lake, Langdon and Cando. Farther east, including Grand Forks and areas toward the Red River Valley, precipitation is transitioning from rain and intermittent freezing rain to all snow overnight. Additional rain and even isolated thunderstorms were reported south of the snow band before a full changeover to snow by sunrise.
Road conditions are expected to worsen quickly as temperatures fall and untreated surfaces freeze. U.S. Highway 2 from Devils Lake to Grand Forks and Interstate 29 north of Fargo could become snow-covered with reduced visibility in heavier bursts. In the Devils Lake Basin, snowfall rates may briefly exceed one inch per hour.
Drivers traveling late tonight into Wednesday morning should slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check North Dakota DOT updates at 511 or travel.dot.nd.gov. Rapid changes in precipitation type may lead to icy stretches before steady snow takes over.
Snow will continue expanding across northeast North Dakota through the morning, with the greatest totals likely along and north of Highway 2. Additional updates are expected if snowfall rates intensify before midday Wednesday.
