Hastings, Nebraska – A narrow but intense band of heavy snow could quickly cover central Nebraska roads Thursday morning, creating slick highways and near-whiteout visibility during both the morning and evening commutes.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Thursday morning through Thursday evening for Valley, Greeley, Sherman and Howard counties. Forecasters say 3 to 5 inches of snow is possible, with isolated totals reaching 6 to 7 inches. Winds may gust up to 40 mph, leading to blowing and drifting snow.

The heaviest snow is expected to develop Thursday morning and persist through the day, possibly lingering into the evening. Because the snow band may only span 40 to 60 miles from north to south, slight shifts in its track could sharply change who sees the highest totals. Communities including Ord, St. Paul, Loup City, Greeley, Wolbach, Scotia and areas near Sherman Reservoir could experience rapid accumulation.

Blowing snow may reduce visibility on Highway 281 and surrounding rural roads. Drivers should prepare for snow-packed surfaces, drifting in open areas and sudden drops in visibility. Consider delaying nonessential travel and check road conditions before leaving.

Forecasters will refine snowfall totals as the storm track becomes clearer. The watch could be upgraded to a warning if confidence increases later today.
