Duluth, Minnesota – Near-whiteout conditions and wind gusts up to 50 mph could make travel dangerous along Minnesota’s North Shore through midday Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until noon CST Thursday for northern Cook and Lake counties, including Isabella and areas along the Boundary Waters eastern and central region. Snow totals between 5 and 10 inches are expected, with 15 to 20 inches possible in higher terrain along the North Shore ridge, especially in central Lake County.
The heaviest snowfall rates are expected overnight into Wednesday morning, when falling and blowing snow could reduce visibility to around a quarter mile. Terrain enhancement along the Lake Superior shoreline will boost snowfall totals and create drifting across exposed stretches of Highway 61.
Travelers should expect snow-covered roads and rapidly changing visibility, particularly in elevated areas. Officials urge motorists to check 511mn.org for updated road conditions and carry emergency supplies if travel is necessary.
Snow and strong winds will gradually ease late Thursday morning, but drifting and slick conditions may linger into the afternoon.
