Grand Junction, Colorado – Wind gusts up to 60 mph and more than a foot of snow could create near-zero visibility across the Roan and Tavaputs Plateaus through early Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Junction, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 5 a.m. MST Thursday for the Roan and Tavaputs Plateaus, including areas near Rio Blanco. Total snow accumulations between 10 and 18 inches are expected, with locally higher amounts possible in favored terrain.
Blowing and drifting snow will make travel very difficult, especially on higher elevation roads and energy development routes across the plateaus. Sudden drops in visibility could occur during heavier snowfall, creating hazardous conditions for drivers and work crews.
Strong winds may also snap tree limbs and cause isolated power outages in exposed areas. Officials urge motorists to slow down, allow extra travel time and check Colorado 511 for the latest road conditions before heading out.
Snow and strong winds will persist into Wednesday night, with gradual improvement expected after daybreak Thursday. Drifting snow may continue to impact roadways even after snowfall tapers.
