Pueblo, Colorado – Travel across Wolf Creek Pass and Cumbres Pass could become nearly impossible as wind gusts reach 70 mph and heavy snow piles up through late Wednesday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11 p.m. MST Wednesday for the Eastern Sawatch Mountains above 11,000 feet and the Eastern San Juan Mountains above 10,000 feet. An additional 6 to 18 inches of snow is expected, with locally higher totals possible in the eastern San Juans. Intense winds will create widespread blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility.
High-elevation routes near Bonanza, Wolf Creek Pass and Cumbres Pass face the most severe conditions. Blowing and drifting snow may obscure roadways and signage, especially during heavier bursts this afternoon. CDOT crews could struggle to keep mountain highways clear as snowfall rates increase.
Strong winds may also snap tree limbs and trigger isolated power outages in exposed alpine areas.
Officials urge travelers to delay trips into the high country and check Colorado 511 for the latest closures and chain restrictions. The warning remains in effect through 11 p.m., with dangerous conditions continuing until snowfall tapers overnight.
