Pontiac, Illinois – Dry grass and gusty southwest winds could turn a small spark into a fast-moving field fire by late morning across Livingston County.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday for Livingston County. Southwest winds will increase to 15 to 25 mph with gusts reaching 35 mph, while relative humidity drops between 17 and 20 percent during the peak afternoon hours.

The greatest concern includes open farmland and grassy areas near Pontiac, Dwight and Fairbury, especially along Interstate 55 and U.S. Route 24 where wind-driven fires could spread quickly. Dry roadside vegetation combined with steady crosswinds may increase the risk of rapid fire growth.

Officials strongly discourage outdoor burning and urge residents to avoid parking vehicles on dry grass. Secure trailer chains to prevent sparks and delay any welding or equipment use that could ignite vegetation.

Winds will gradually ease after sunset, but elevated fire danger will continue until humidity levels recover later tonight. Additional statements may be issued if dry conditions persist into Thursday.
