Pueblo, Colorado – Wind gusts up to 60 mph could rapidly spread any spark into a dangerous grassfire by late morning across southern Colorado, putting communities along the Interstate 25 corridor on alert.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday for Pueblo County and western Las Animas County, including Pueblo, Trinidad and Thatcher. West winds will increase to 30 to 40 mph with gusts as high as 60 mph, while relative humidity drops to 11 percent. A Fire Weather Watch is already in place from Thursday morning through Thursday evening as another round of gusty winds and dry air develops.
The strongest winds Wednesday could impact travel on I-25, U.S. 50 and Highway 160, especially for high-profile vehicles. Open grasslands and foothill areas near Trinidad Lake State Park and the Wet Mountains face the highest fire spread risk.
Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning, postpone welding and secure trailer chains to prevent roadside sparks. Even routine yard work could ignite dry fuels under these conditions.
Winds ease slightly after sunset Wednesday, but elevated fire danger may redevelop Thursday. Additional warnings could be issued if conditions intensify.
