Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Drivers across the Mid-Atlantic and into southern New England face sharply reduced visibility before daybreak Wednesday, with fog cutting sightlines to one-quarter mile or less and slowing travel on major corridors including I-95, the New Jersey Turnpike and the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

According to the National Weather Service, Dense Fog Advisories remain in effect until 10 a.m. Wednesday for much of Delaware, eastern Maryland, New Jersey, southeast Pennsylvania, New York City and southern Connecticut. In parts of Cecil, Harford, Lancaster and York counties, visibility has dropped to a quarter mile or lower. The advisory expands north into Long Island, the Hudson Valley and coastal Connecticut overnight.

The thickest fog is developing along the I-95 corridor from Baltimore through Wilmington, Philadelphia and into Newark and New York City. Bridges, overpasses and low-lying areas near the Delaware Bay and Chesapeake Bay are especially vulnerable to sudden visibility drops before the morning commute.

Marine conditions are also deteriorating. Dense Fog Advisories cover Delaware Bay, New York Harbor and Long Island Sound through Wednesday morning, with visibility falling below one nautical mile. Small Craft Advisories remain in place for portions of the Atlantic coastal waters through late Tuesday night, where seas are running 3 to 6 feet.

Drivers should slow down, use low-beam headlights and allow extra stopping distance. Mariners are urged to use radar, navigation lights and proper fog signals.

Advisories remain in effect through Wednesday morning, and additional updates could be issued if visibility worsens before sunrise.
