Flagstaff, Arizona – Drivers across the Mogollon Rim and Kaibab Plateau could see conditions worsen rapidly late tonight as a stronger round of snow and wind develops before the Wednesday morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Flagstaff, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 5 p.m. Tuesday, with up to 1 inch of additional snow and wind gusts reaching 45 mph. A Winter Storm Watch then takes over late tonight through Wednesday evening, with up to 8 inches of snow possible and wind gusts as high as 60 mph.
Communities including Flagstaff, Williams, Munds Park, Forest Lakes, Happy Jack and Jacob Lake are in the watch area. While snowfall through late afternoon will remain light, heavier bands are expected to develop overnight. Interstate 40 near Flagstaff and Williams, along with Interstate 17 south of Flagstaff, could become snow-covered with reduced visibility during peak travel hours Wednesday.
Bridges and overpasses are likely to ice first as temperatures fall. Strong winds may down tree limbs and cause scattered power outages in higher elevations.
Motorists should delay nonessential travel, secure loose outdoor items and check az511.gov before departure. Additional warnings may be issued if confidence in heavier snowfall increases overnight.
