Julian, California – Mountain roads east of San Diego could turn slick and dangerous within hours as heavy wet snow and wind gusts up to 75 mph move in through Thursday night.
According to the National Weather Service in San Diego, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 10 p.m. Thursday for the San Diego County Mountains. Snowfall of 3 to 6 inches is expected below 5,500 feet from Tuesday evening into Wednesday, with up to 9 inches possible at higher elevations. Another 1 to 3 inches could fall Thursday. Winds will peak Wednesday morning, with widespread gusts of 50 to 60 mph and isolated gusts near 75 mph along desert-facing slopes.
Julian, Pine Valley and surrounding mountain communities may see snow-covered stretches along State Route 78 and Interstate 8 near higher passes. Strong winds could topple tree limbs and trigger scattered power outages, especially in exposed foothill areas.
Travelers should delay nonessential trips, secure loose outdoor items and check Caltrans QuickMap or call 511 for updated road conditions. Drivers who must travel should carry chains and emergency supplies.
Snow and wind will gradually ease late Thursday, but icy patches may linger after sunset. Additional advisories are possible if snowfall intensifies.
