Rhinelander, Wisconsin – Roads across northern Wisconsin could turn slick within hours as snow, sleet and light ice move in by 9 p.m., threatening the Wednesday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 9 p.m. Tuesday until noon Wednesday for Vilas, Forest, Florence, Northern Marinette, Oneida, Langlade and Northern Oconto counties. Areas near Eagle River, Crandon and Florence could see 2 to 6 inches of snow and sleet, along with up to one-tenth of an inch of ice. Farther south toward Rhinelander, Antigo and Mountain, snow totals will range from a half inch to 2 inches with similar ice buildup. Winds may gust up to 35 mph overnight.

The combination of wet, heavy snow and gusty winds raises the risk of tree damage and scattered power outages, especially in northern Forest, Florence and northern Marinette counties. Slippery stretches are likely on Highways 45, 51 and 32, along with untreated county roads.

Drivers should slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check Wisconsin 511 before leaving. Sidewalks and driveways may glaze over, increasing the risk of falls.

Precipitation tapers late Wednesday morning, but icy patches could linger into the afternoon. Additional advisories may be issued if icing becomes more widespread.
