Grand Forks, North Dakota – Roads across the Red River Valley could turn slick by the evening commute as snow and a light glaze of ice spread into eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota starting at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 6 p.m. Tuesday until midnight Wednesday night for portions of northeast and southeast North Dakota and north central and northwest Minnesota. Areas impacted include Grand Forks region communities such as Hillsboro, Mayville and Cooperstown in North Dakota, along with Ada, Mahnomen and Park Rapids in Minnesota.
Forecasters expect 2 to 5 inches of snow, with locally higher totals possible, along with a light ice accumulation. Winds could gust as high as 40 mph, leading to patchy blowing snow and brief visibility reductions, especially on open stretches of Highway 2, Highway 200 and Interstate 29.
The mix of snow and light icing will likely impact both the Wednesday morning and evening commutes. Drivers should slow down, increase following distance and check 511 road conditions before traveling.
Snow and gusty winds will taper late Wednesday night, but additional updates are possible if totals trend higher.
