Lubbock, Texas – Any spark across the South Plains could turn into a fast-moving wildfire by late morning Tuesday as southwest winds gust to 65 mph and humidity drops near 13 percent through 8 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. CST for the South Plains, far southern Texas Panhandle and portions of the Rolling Plains, including Lubbock, Plainview, Levelland, Brownfield and Childress. Southwest winds will range from 30 to 45 mph, with peak gusts up to 65 mph. In Dickens and Garza counties, gusts may reach 50 mph.

Vegetation remains normal to dry, allowing fires to spread rapidly under strong winds and warm afternoon temperatures. Blowing dust may also reduce visibility along U.S. 84, U.S. 62/82 and rural farm roads.

A Fire Weather Watch is already posted for Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening, when humidity could fall as low as 10 percent with gusts up to 40 mph, extending the wildfire threat another day.

Residents should avoid outdoor burning, secure trailer chains and park vehicles away from dry grass. Fire crews warn that containment will be difficult if fires ignite. Additional warnings may be issued if conditions worsen Wednesday.
