Juneau, Alaska – Boat crews in Glacier Bay and the Northern Lynn Canal face rapid ice buildup and gale-force winds that could capsize vessels within hours, with freezing spray piling up at rates of 2 centimeters per hour through early Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Juneau, a Heavy Freezing Spray Warning remains in effect for Glacier Bay until 3 a.m. Wednesday and for the Northern Lynn Canal until 6 a.m. Wednesday. A Gale Warning continues for Glacier Bay until 6 a.m. Tuesday and for the Northern Lynn Canal until midnight Tuesday, with north winds reaching 30 to 40 knots and gusts up to 50 knots. Small Craft Advisories extend beyond the gale periods.
In Glacier Bay, seas are running 6 feet early Tuesday with sustained north winds near 35 knots before easing slightly tonight. Ice accumulation on decks and rigging could disable steering and communication systems. In the Northern Lynn Canal, seas have built to 11 feet with 40-knot winds, creating steep, hazardous waves from Haines to Skagway.
Heavy ice accretion adds dangerous top weight, increasing the risk of sudden loss of stability. Mariners should remain in port, seek safe harbor immediately, or alter course to avoid the strongest winds. Secure loose gear and monitor onboard systems for ice buildup.
Conditions gradually improve Wednesday, but another round of gales is possible by Friday. Warnings remain in effect through early Wednesday morning.
