Grand Forks, North Dakota – Rain will transition to snow overnight, bringing gusty winds and travel impacts into Wednesday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, precipitation will begin as rain across much of eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota Tuesday evening before changing to snow from north to south after midnight.
The greatest impacts are expected from late Tuesday night through Wednesday afternoon. Forecasters say snowfall rates may be highest just after rain transitions to snow early Wednesday morning. Snow will continue through the day, gradually diminishing by late afternoon and evening.
Wind gusts Tuesday evening are forecast between 35 and 45 mph in cities including Grand Forks, Fargo, Devils Lake, Hallock, and Thief River Falls. Gusts will slowly decrease Wednesday but remain breezy.
Temperatures are expected to fall into the 20s and low 30s by Wednesday morning, allowing snow to accumulate on untreated roads. Interstate 29 from Fargo to Grand Forks, Interstate 94 near Fargo, and U.S. Highway 2 near Devils Lake could experience slick conditions during the Wednesday morning commute.
Northern communities such as Langdon, Hallock, and Roseau will see snow earlier in the evening, while southern areas including Wahpeton and Valley City may not change to snow until after midnight.
Drivers are urged to allow extra travel time and monitor local road conditions as snowfall continues into Wednesday evening.
