Minneapolis, Minnesota – Rain changing to snow could bring up to 1 inch near I-94 late Thursday, impacting travel.
According to the US National Weather Service Twin Cities, an active weather pattern is moving into the region following recent sunshine. Rain is expected to develop Wednesday before transitioning to snow in parts of central and northern Minnesota, particularly north of Interstate 94.
Forecasters indicate the greatest potential for measurable accumulation — around 1 inch — will occur from Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning. Areas along and north of the I-94 corridor, including parts of Minneapolis and St. Paul, could see rain mix with and change to snow as temperatures cool.
The agency also noted an additional round of snow may develop Thursday night, with light snow chances lingering into early Friday. While widespread heavy accumulation is not expected at this time, changing road conditions could affect overnight and early morning commuters.
Drivers along I-94 and connecting roadways should prepare for reduced visibility and slick spots, especially during the Thursday morning and Friday morning commutes. Even minor accumulation can create hazardous conditions on bridges and untreated surfaces.
Temperatures are forecast to trend cooler into the weekend, with mostly cloudy conditions expected Saturday.
The National Weather Service advises residents to monitor updated forecasts as timing and snowfall totals may shift. Young drivers, students, and early-shift workers should allow extra travel time if precipitation changes over to snow overnight.
