Reno, Nevada – Snow and wind gusts up to 55 mph are creating hazardous travel across northern and central Nevada, with slick highways and reduced visibility expected through early Wednesday morning in western counties and through 10 p.m. Wednesday farther east.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Reno and Elko, Winter Weather Advisories remain in effect for much of the state. Northern Washoe County, including Gerlach and Empire, could see an additional 1 to 6 inches of snow with gusts reaching 45 mph through 4 a.m. Wednesday. In the Western Nevada Basin and Range, including Fallon, Fernley and Pyramid Lake, 1 to 2 inches are expected — up to 5 inches in higher terrain — with gusts to 50 mph generating 2 to 5 foot waves on the lake beginning 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Farther south and east, Mineral and Southern Lyon counties may pick up 3 to 8 inches along SR-208, SR-359 and US-6. Across Elko, White Pine, Humboldt, Lander, Eureka and Nye counties, valleys are forecast to receive 2 to 5 inches, with 4 to 8 inches above 5,000 feet and gusts as high as 55 mph.
Drivers along I-80, US-95, US-50 and rural state routes should slow down and check 511 for real-time road conditions. Advisories remain in place through early Wednesday in western Nevada and until 10 p.m. Wednesday across much of eastern Nevada, where blowing snow may continue to reduce visibility.
