Topeka, Kansas – Southwest winds gusting to 45 mph and afternoon temperatures near 80 degrees will create fast-moving fire conditions across north central Kansas beginning at noon Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Topeka, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from noon to 9 p.m. CST for Republic, Washington, Marshall, Cloud, Clay, Riley, Ottawa and Dickinson counties. Relative humidity will fall between 20 and 25 percent as sustained southwest winds increase to 20 to 30 mph, creating an environment where any spark could spread rapidly through dry grasses.
Communities including Manhattan, Concordia, Clay Center, Junction City and Abilene face elevated wildfire risk during peak heating hours. Fire officials warn that cured winter fuels combined with strong wind could push flames quickly across open fields and along rural roadways.
Residents should avoid outdoor burning and delay activities such as welding or parking vehicles on dry grass. Secure trailer chains and dispose of cigarettes properly. High-profile vehicles traveling along U.S. Highway 81 and Interstate 70 may also encounter strong crosswinds.
The Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 9 p.m. Tuesday, when winds are expected to ease after sunset. Fire crews urge residents to stay alert for changing conditions through the evening.
