Blacksburg, Virginia – Mild temperatures 10 to 15 degrees above normal will continue across southwest Virginia through Friday, with rain chances increasing Thursday ahead of a cold front.
According to the US National Weather Service in Blacksburg, highs today and Wednesday will range from the upper 50s to mid-60s under increasing cloud cover. Overnight lows are expected between the upper 30s and upper 40s.
Rain chances return Thursday, with precipitation probabilities around 60 percent as scattered showers develop ahead of a cold front moving through Friday. Areas along Interstate 81, U.S. Route 460 and Interstate 77 — including Roanoke, Blacksburg, Christiansburg and Wytheville — could see wet roadways during the Thursday afternoon and evening commute.
Forecasters said the mild pattern will hold through Friday before temperatures drop sharply this weekend. Winter-like temperatures are expected to return Sunday into early next week as colder air settles into the region.
While no significant winter precipitation is currently forecast, the colder air may impact travel and outdoor plans late in the weekend.
Commuters and college students traveling along I-81 and surrounding mountain corridors should monitor updated forecasts for timing changes, particularly Thursday evening.
Residents are encouraged to enjoy the pleasant midweek conditions while preparing for a shift back to colder temperatures by Sunday.
