Louisville, Kentucky – Strong to severe thunderstorms may develop across central Kentucky and southern Indiana Thursday afternoon and evening, with damaging winds and large hail as the primary threats.

According to the US National Weather Service in Louisville, a strengthening low pressure system moving into the western Great Lakes will pull warm, moist air into the region Thursday. Scattered showers and storms are expected to form ahead of an approaching cold front later in the day.

Forecasters said some storms could become strong to severe, particularly during the late afternoon through late evening hours. The main hazards include damaging wind gusts and large hail, though an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.

The greatest risk currently includes areas along and west of Interstate 65, including Louisville, Elizabethtown, Bowling Green and Owensboro. Cities along Interstate 75, including Lexington, may also see strong storms depending on how the system evolves.

Storms are expected to weaken after the cold front passes late Thursday night.

Residents are urged to stay up to date with the latest forecasts and ensure they have multiple ways to receive warnings. Those with outdoor plans Thursday afternoon or evening should monitor weather conditions closely.

Evening commuters along I-65, I-64, I-71 and I-75 may encounter heavy rain, gusty winds and reduced visibility during peak travel hours.

Additional forecast updates are expected as Thursday approaches.
