Lincoln, Illinois – Severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes and damaging winds may develop across central and southeast Illinois Thursday afternoon into the evening.

According to the US National Weather Service in Central Illinois, a Level 2 out of 5 severe weather risk has been issued for areas east and southeast of a Jacksonville-to-Bloomington line. Cities including Springfield, Decatur, Champaign, Effingham and portions of Bloomington fall within or near the outlined risk area.

Forecasters said storms are expected to develop Thursday afternoon, with coverage increasing into the evening hours. Primary hazards include damaging wind gusts and isolated tornadoes. Small hail cannot be ruled out.

The strongest storms are most likely along and east of Interstate 55, including corridors near Interstate 57, Interstate 70 and U.S. Route 51. Storms are expected to weaken and exit the region by late evening.

This system follows several days of unseasonably warm temperatures, with highs reaching the upper 50s to near 70 degrees. The warm, unstable air mass combined with strengthening winds will support the potential for severe weather.

Residents are encouraged to stay weather aware, review safety plans and ensure they have multiple ways to receive warnings. Those with outdoor plans Thursday afternoon should monitor forecast updates closely.

Commuters, students and evening travelers may face delays if warnings are issued during peak travel hours.

Additional updates are expected as the storm system approaches.
