Tulsa, Oklahoma – Increasing south winds and temperatures in the lower to mid-70s will elevate grassfire risk across northeast Oklahoma Tuesday afternoon, with gusts reaching 35 mph.

According to the US National Weather Service in Tulsa, limited to locally elevated fire weather conditions are expected across much of northeast Oklahoma and parts of northwest Arkansas. Areas that received lighter rainfall over the weekend face a higher risk of rapid fire spread.

Forecasters said sustained south winds between 10 and 15 mph, combined with gusts up to 35 mph and relative humidity between 35% and 50%, will create favorable conditions for grassland fire growth. Grassland fire spread rates are projected between 90 and 170 feet per minute during the mid- to late afternoon hours.

The greatest concern includes communities near Tulsa, Bartlesville, Miami and Muskogee, particularly along open stretches of US-75, I-44, US-69 and US-60 where dry vegetation is present.

Fire weather concerns are expected to continue through Thursday as breezy conditions persist.

Officials urge residents to properly dispose of lit cigarettes, avoid parking vehicles on dry grass and fully extinguish any outdoor burning materials. Even small sparks could quickly spread under gusty conditions.

Outdoor workers, ranchers and commuters traveling through rural areas should remain alert for smoke or fast-moving grassfires Tuesday afternoon.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local updates and avoid activities that could ignite dry vegetation.
