Cheyenne, Wyoming – Interstate 80 at the Summit between Cheyenne and Laramie could see wind gusts up to 75 mph by daybreak Tuesday, creating dangerous crosswinds for semis and light trailers through late evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Cheyenne, a High Wind Warning remains in effect across much of southeast Wyoming and the Nebraska Panhandle. Winds will strengthen to 40 to 50 mph with gusts reaching 75 mph along the South Laramie Range and Interstate 80 Summit from 5 a.m. through 11 p.m. Tuesday. Gusts up to 70 mph are expected near Arlington, Elk Mountain, Rawlins, and along the Bordeaux stretch of Interstate 25.

In Carbon County, including Saratoga and Encampment, southwest winds will gust near 65 mph until 8 p.m. Blowing and drifting snow may drop visibility below one mile at times along I-80 near Arlington and Elk Mountain. Farther east into Scottsbluff, Sidney, and Torrington, west winds up to 65 mph will develop by 9 a.m., with blowing dust reducing visibility.

Travel impacts will be significant, especially for campers, box trucks, and tractor-trailers. Drivers should delay non-essential travel, keep both hands on the wheel, and prepare for sudden gusts near gaps and ridgelines.

Winds are expected to ease late Tuesday night, but hazardous travel conditions will persist through the evening commute.
