Dodge City, Kansas – Drivers across southwest Kansas have just hours to prepare as wind gusts up to 70 mph are expected to slam highways by late morning, creating blowing dust and dangerous crosswinds through 6 p.m. Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, a High Wind Warning remains in effect from 11 a.m. CST through 6 p.m. CST for much of southwest and west central Kansas, including Ford, Finney, Seward, Meade, Grant, and Gray counties. Sustained southwest to west winds of 35 to 45 mph will peak this afternoon, with gusts reaching 70 mph.

Travel along U.S. Highway 50, U.S. 83, and Kansas Highway 23 could become hazardous, especially for semis, RVs, and other high-profile vehicles. Blowing dust may drop visibility below one mile at times, particularly in open areas near Garden City, Liberal, and Dodge City.

Strong gusts could snap tree limbs, damage fences and outbuildings, and trigger isolated power outages. Residents should secure loose outdoor items, avoid parking under trees, and remain indoors during peak wind speeds.

Conditions are expected to improve after sunset, but additional advisories remain possible if wind speeds persist into the evening commute.
