Baltimore, Maryland – Drivers across the northern Shenandoah Valley and eastern West Virginia could encounter visibility below one-quarter mile through 8 a.m. Tuesday as freezing fog coats roads and bridges with a thin layer of ice.

According to the National Weather Service in Baltimore/Washington, a Freezing Fog Advisory remains in effect until 8 a.m. EST for Clarke and Frederick counties in Virginia and for Hampshire, Morgan, Berkeley, and Jefferson counties in West Virginia.

The combination of dense fog and sub-freezing temperatures may create slick spots on untreated roads, overpasses, and sidewalks. Areas near Winchester, Berryville, Martinsburg, Charles Town, and Romney are most vulnerable during the early morning commute.

Motorists should slow down, use low-beam headlights, and increase following distance. Black ice may be difficult to see, especially on rural roads and bridges.

Conditions are expected to improve shortly after sunrise as temperatures rise and fog dissipates. Additional advisories are unlikely once visibility improves beyond mid-morning.
