Albuquerque, New Mexico – Travel through the Chuska Mountains could turn hazardous as early as 2 a.m. Tuesday as snow and strong winds reduce visibility and coat higher-elevation roads before sunrise.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 2 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday for the Chuska Mountains. Snow totals up to 4 inches are expected, with the heaviest accumulation likely during the Tuesday morning hours. Wind gusts could reach 50 mph, producing areas of blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility below one-half mile at times.

Mountain routes near Sheep Springs and along U.S. 491 at higher elevations may become snow-packed and slick through the day. Gusty winds could also snap small tree branches and create drifting across exposed roadways.

Drivers should slow down, increase following distance and consider delaying non-essential travel during peak snowfall Tuesday morning. Check nmroads.com or call 511 for the latest road conditions before heading out.

The most dangerous travel window runs from pre-dawn through early afternoon Tuesday, with improving conditions expected after sunset.
