Green Bay, Wisconsin – Drivers across northern Wisconsin have less than 12 hours before snow and ice begin coating highways, with slick conditions expected to peak during the Wednesday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, a Winter Weather Advisory takes effect at 6 p.m. Tuesday and continues until noon Wednesday for Vilas, Forest, Florence and northern Marinette counties. Forecasters expect 1 to 4 inches of snow, up to one-tenth of an inch of ice and wind gusts reaching 35 mph.

The combination of light icing and gusty winds could create slippery stretches on U.S. Highway 45 near Eagle River, Highway 32 in Crandon and rural roads across Florence and northern Marinette counties. Blowing snow may reduce visibility at times overnight, especially in open areas.

Local officials urge drivers to slow down and check 511 for the latest Wisconsin road conditions before heading out. Sidewalks, stairs and untreated driveways may turn icy within minutes of precipitation beginning.

The most hazardous travel window centers on the early morning hours through midday Wednesday. Additional advisories could follow if ice totals increase overnight.
