Denver, CO – Drivers crossing Rabbit Ears Pass face rapidly deteriorating conditions before sunrise Tuesday as a burst of heavy snow and 55 mph wind gusts slam northwest Colorado through early Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Denver, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 5 a.m. Thursday for West Jackson and West Grand counties above 9,000 feet, including Rabbit Ears Pass near Mt. Zirkel. Snow totals between 12 and 24 inches are expected, with strong winds producing widespread blowing and drifting snow.

Forecasters warn that between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. Tuesday, an intense round of snow and wind could drop visibility below a quarter mile. Sudden snow squalls may create brief but dangerous whiteouts, quickly covering U.S. Highway 40 with snow and ice.

Road conditions will likely become very difficult at times, especially on exposed stretches of the pass where crosswinds are strongest. Traction laws and temporary closures are possible as snowfall intensifies.

Officials urge motorists to delay mountain travel if possible. If driving is unavoidable, carry food, water and a flashlight, and check 511 or cotrip.org for real-time road updates.

The warning continues through 5 a.m. Thursday, and additional alerts may follow if squalls strengthen.
