Bismarck, ND – Drivers across north central and northwest North Dakota should finish travel plans before 6 p.m. Tuesday as heavy snow and 45 mph wind gusts create hazardous road conditions through late Wednesday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Bismarck, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 6 p.m. Tuesday until midnight Wednesday night for Divide, Burke, Renville, Bottineau, Rolette, Williams, Mountrail, Ward, McHenry and Pierce counties. Cities including Minot, Williston, Rugby, Bottineau, Crosby and Stanley are under the warning.

Forecasters expect 3 to 8 inches of snow, with a light glaze of ice possible. Strong winds gusting up to 45 mph will produce areas of blowing snow, reducing visibility and drifting across open highways.

Major routes such as U.S. Highway 2, U.S. 83 and state highways across the northern tier may become snow-covered and slick, especially during the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes. Rural roads could become difficult to pass as drifts build.

Officials urge residents to delay non-essential travel. If you must drive, carry a winter survival kit with food, water and a flashlight, and check 511 for updated North Dakota road conditions.

The warning remains in effect until midnight Wednesday night, and additional advisories may be issued as conditions evolve.
