Marquette, MI – Drivers across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula should prepare for slick roads and falling visibility starting Tuesday evening as heavy snow and light icing spread west to east through Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Winter Storm Warning takes effect at 7 p.m. Tuesday for Keweenaw, Northern Houghton, Baraga and Marquette counties, lasting until 7 p.m. Wednesday. Snow totals between 5 and 11 inches are expected, with a light glaze up to one tenth of an inch of ice. Winds may gust as high as 50 mph over the Keweenaw Peninsula, producing blowing snow and reduced visibility.

Farther south and east, including Escanaba, Manistique, Munising and Newberry, a Winter Storm Warning runs from 1 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday. These areas could see 3 to 7 inches of snow and around one tenth inch of ice, with wind gusts up to 40 mph.

The highest snow totals are expected over the Keweenaw and higher terrain of Marquette and Baraga counties. U.S. 41, M-28 and M-35 may become snow-covered and slick, especially during the Wednesday morning and evening commutes. Ice accumulation and gusty winds could also down tree limbs and trigger isolated power outages.

Officials urge residents to delay travel if possible and keep emergency supplies in vehicles. Warnings remain in effect through Wednesday evening, with additional updates possible as conditions evolve.
