ELKO, Nev. – Travel across the Ruby Mountains could become impossible at times tonight as heavy snow and 60 mph wind gusts slam high elevations through Wednesday evening. Whiteout conditions are already developing, and snowfall rates will intensify overnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Elko, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 10 p.m. PST Wednesday for the Ruby Mountains and East Humboldt Range. Total snow accumulations will range from 6 to 23 inches, with the highest totals along ridge tops and wind-prone passes. Winds gusting to 60 mph will drive blowing snow, dropping visibility below one-quarter mile.

Backcountry roads, mountain passes, and access routes near Lamoille Canyon may become impassable. Strong wind combined with heavy snow loading could snap tree limbs and down power lines, leading to isolated outages in remote areas of Elko County.

If travel is unavoidable, carry extra food, water, blankets, and a flashlight. Check Nevada road conditions by calling 511 before departing. The storm tapers late Wednesday night, but hazardous mountain travel will likely persist into early Thursday.
