MIDLAND, Texas – Drivers across the Permian Basin could face near-zero visibility by early Tuesday morning as strong winds kick up widespread blowing dust across West Texas. The National Weather Service in Midland has issued a Blowing Dust Advisory from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. CST Tuesday, affecting Gaines, Dawson, Andrews, Loving, Winkler, and Reeves County Plains.

According to the National Weather Service, sustained winds and gusts over open terrain could reduce visibility to between one-quarter and one mile, with sudden drops to near zero along rural highways and oilfield routes. Blowing dust is most likely to impact U.S. 385, I-20, and State Highway 18, where conditions can shift rapidly without warning.

Travelers are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and maintain extra distance between vehicles. The Texas Department of Transportation recommends avoiding travel during peak afternoon hours when winds are strongest.

The advisory remains in effect through Tuesday evening, with improving conditions expected overnight as winds weaken. Additional advisories could be issued if gusts persist into midweek.
