New York, New York – Drivers across parts of northeast New Jersey, southern Westchester and Long Island could encounter slick patches before sunrise Tuesday as spotty freezing drizzle develops ahead of a warm front.
According to the National Weather Service in New York, areas including eastern Bergen and Passaic counties, western Essex and Union counties in New Jersey, southern Westchester County and much of Nassau and Suffolk counties may see light freezing drizzle late Monday night into Tuesday morning. While precipitation will be scattered and light, even a thin glaze can create hazardous travel conditions.
Elevated roadways such as the Garden State Parkway, I-287, the Long Island Expressway and local parkways are especially vulnerable to icing. Bridges, overpasses and untreated secondary roads may turn slippery during the early morning commute.
Drivers should slow down, increase following distance and check New Jersey DOT and New York State traffic updates before departing. Pedestrians should use caution on sidewalks and stairs where thin ice may form.
Temperatures are expected to edge above freezing later Tuesday morning, reducing the icing risk, but isolated slick spots could linger through mid-morning.
