Boston, Massachusetts – Drivers across Massachusetts, Rhode Island and northern Connecticut could encounter icy patches before sunrise Tuesday as light freezing drizzle develops during the early morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a weak system passing north of the region may produce patchy light freezing drizzle or flurries from the pre-dawn hours through mid-morning Tuesday. While coverage is expected to remain spotty, even light glaze can create slick conditions on untreated surfaces.

Elevated roadways, including portions of I-90, I-95 and I-84, along with secondary and unpaved roads, face the highest risk for brief icing. Sidewalks, parking lots and bridges in cities such as Boston, Worcester, Springfield, Providence and Hartford may become slippery, especially before temperatures rise above freezing.

Morning commuters should slow down, increase following distance and use caution on ramps and overpasses. Pedestrians are urged to watch for icy spots on stairs and sidewalks.

Temperatures are expected to gradually climb later Tuesday morning, reducing the icing threat, but isolated slick spots could linger in shaded areas through late morning.
