Las Vegas, Nevada – Drivers along U.S. 395 in Owens Valley could face snow-covered pavement and sudden visibility drops by Tuesday afternoon, with conditions deteriorating quickly after dark.
According to the National Weather Service in Las Vegas, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect from Tuesday morning through late Tuesday night for Owens Valley, including Bishop, Independence, Lone Pine and Olancha. Forecasters warn heavy snow is possible, with 3 to 6 inches expected mainly north of Lone Pine. Wind gusts could reach 40 mph, creating blowing snow and hazardous travel.
Snow is expected to develop Tuesday afternoon as snow levels hover near the valley floor. Colder air moving in after sunset will likely intensify snowfall rates, increasing the risk of spin-outs and slide-offs on U.S. 395 and local roadways. Bridges, overpasses and shaded stretches will become slick first.
Travelers should delay non-essential trips and allow extra time if driving is unavoidable. Keep extra distance between vehicles, avoid sudden braking and ensure your vehicle is winter-ready. Conditions may change rapidly through the evening commute.
If heavier bands develop, warnings could replace the watch before Tuesday night.
