Omaha, Nebraska – Strong south to southwest winds and low humidity will create extreme fire danger Tuesday afternoon and evening across eastern Nebraska, including areas along Interstate 80.

According to the US National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, wind gusts between 25 and 40 mph are expected Tuesday, with the strongest winds focused across southeast Nebraska and southwest Iowa. At the same time, relative humidity values are forecast to drop as low as 15 to 30 percent, especially toward central Nebraska.

Forecast graphics show peak gusts near 38 to 40 mph in communities including Lincoln, Beatrice, and Falls City, with humidity readings dipping into the upper teens and lower 20s during the afternoon. Omaha and surrounding areas along I-80 and US-75 are expected to see sustained breezy conditions through early evening.

The combination of dry air and strong winds increases the likelihood that any fire that develops could spread rapidly and become difficult to control. Officials advise avoiding outdoor burning and using caution with any activity that could produce sparks.

The most critical window is expected from midday through early evening Tuesday, before winds gradually weaken after sunset.

Drivers along I-80, US-275 near Norfolk, and US-77 near Beatrice may notice blowing dust in open areas, though widespread visibility issues are not currently forecast.

The elevated fire danger may be particularly relevant for agricultural operations and rural communities during the afternoon hours.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service Omaha/Valley office and follow local emergency management guidance.
