Sun Valley, Idaho – Snow and 45 mph wind gusts will begin hammering central and eastern Idaho’s mountain corridors by 8 p.m., threatening difficult travel through the Tuesday morning and evening commutes.

According to the National Weather Service in Pocatello, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 8 p.m. tonight to 5 p.m. Tuesday for the Sawtooth and Stanley Basin, Sun Valley region, Big Lost Highlands, Copper Basin and the Frank Church Wilderness. Snow totals will reach 4 to 8 inches below 7,500 feet and 8 to 12 inches above 7,500 feet, with blowing and drifting snow reducing visibility on exposed ridges.

Additional advisories begin at 11 p.m. for the Caribou Range, Big Hole Mountains, Centennial Mountains near Island Park, Bear Lake Valley and the Beaverhead-Lemhi Highlands. These areas can expect 2 to 6 inches below 7,000 feet and 6 to 10 inches above 7,000 feet through late Tuesday afternoon.

Highways 75 near Ketchum and Galena Summit, U.S. 20 near Island Park and mountain routes near Montpelier and Soda Springs may turn snow-covered overnight. Drivers should slow down, allow extra distance between vehicles and check 511.idaho.gov before traveling. Conditions will gradually improve after 5 p.m. Tuesday, but drifting snow may linger into the evening.
