Isabella, Minnesota – Travel along Minnesota’s North Shore could become dangerous after 9 p.m. Tuesday as heavy snow and 50 mph wind gusts create near-whiteout conditions through midday Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 9 p.m. Tuesday until noon Thursday for northern Cook and Lake counties, including the Boundary Waters eastern and central areas. Snow totals of 4 to 8 inches are expected in most locations, but higher terrain along the North Shore ridge could see 10 to 15 inches. Winds may gust up to 50 mph, reducing visibility to around one-quarter mile at times.

The heaviest snowfall rates are expected Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, especially across elevated areas of central Lake County. Highway 61 along the North Shore and inland routes near Isabella could become snow-covered quickly, with blowing and drifting snow making travel hazardous.

Drivers should check 511mn.org before heading out and carry emergency supplies in case of delays. Conditions may deteriorate rapidly overnight Tuesday, and additional updates will follow as the storm intensifies through Thursday.
