Pocatello, Idaho – Travel over Emigration Summit could become nearly impossible after 11 p.m. tonight as a powerful winter storm unloads up to 30 inches of snow in the Bear River Range and blasts ridgelines with 55 mph wind gusts.
According to the National Weather Service in Pocatello, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 11 p.m. tonight through 5 a.m. Thursday for the Bear River Range. Snow will intensify overnight, with 12 to 18 inches expected below 7,000 feet and 20 to 30 inches above 7,000 feet by early Thursday morning. Strong winds with a frontal passage tonight will produce blowing and drifting snow, sharply reducing visibility on exposed stretches.
High-elevation routes near Emigration Summit and backcountry passes will see the worst conditions first, with whiteouts possible by daybreak Tuesday. Idaho Transportation Department officials urge drivers to check 511.idaho.gov or call 511 for real-time road updates before attempting travel.
If you must travel, carry extra food, water and a flashlight in case you become stranded. Conditions will remain hazardous through Wednesday night, and additional impacts are likely as snow continues piling up into early Thursday.
