Gainesville, Georgia – Scammers posing as federal agents are targeting Hall County residents, prompting warnings.
According to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), investigators with the Special Investigations Unit are urging residents to use extra caution after two recent incidents involving individuals allegedly impersonating FBI agents and FDIC officials.
Authorities said residents received messages containing links that appeared to connect to their banks. After clicking the link, victims were reportedly contacted by phone by someone claiming to be investigating bank fraud. The caller allegedly instructed victims to help track down bank tellers suspected of illegal activity.
SIU Sgt. Scott Buffington said the scammers are knowledgeable about banking practices, which may lead victims to believe they are legitimately assisting an investigation. Once a victim clicks the link, investigators said the scammer can gain access to the victim’s phone or computer. If online banking is involved, account information may be compromised.
In one case reported last week, a victim allegedly lost more than $50,000. In another incident, a victim reportedly withdrew $30,000 but bank employees recognized the suspected fraud attempt and intervened, according to HCSO. Both cases remain under investigation, and authorities said they are not releasing additional details at this time.
Investigators advise residents not to click suspicious links, not to answer calls from unknown numbers, and to report suspected fraudulent activity directly to their bank. Anyone who believes they have been victimized should contact Hall County Dispatch at 770-536-8812 or call 911 in an emergency.
Officials noted that young adults and students managing online banking accounts may also be vulnerable to similar schemes.
